Ingram Calls For Finalisation Of Snowy JGE

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, today called on the Victorian and Federal governments to finalise the establishment of the Snowy Joint Government Enterprise (JGE).

By Craig Ingrham - 10th November 2003 - Back to News

"The Snowy JGE is the body that is responsible for securing the water for the Snowy River’s environmental flows," Mr Ingram said.

"It is essential that the JGE is finalised so that the major water savings projects can be commenced.

"I am pleased to see the recent positive announcements from the NSW government that they have announced their representative on the board of the JGE and have also put forward their first major project for consideration.

"The NSW Government has promoted one major project, which is the Barrenbox Swamp proposal put forward by Murrumbidgee Irrigation Limited.

"The estimate is that this project alone could deliver 30 gigalitres (30,000 megalitres) of environmental water.

"The Victorian Government has already finalised one water saving initiative - the Woorinen Pipeline project - which will provide more than 2000 megalitres of water for the Snowy River environmental flows and another water savings project is almost complete.

"Both governments must complete the establishment of the JGE as soon as possible to ensure water is available for flushing and channel forming flows when the Jindabyne Dam outlet modifications are completed," Mr Ingram concluded.
