Street Tree Retention Gets The NodResidents in Polden Crescent and Langford Street, Morwell will continue to enjoy the glorious autumn foliage colours of the liquidambar trees that line their roads after Latrobe City Council agreed on Monday that the trees can stay. By Latrobe City Council - 14th July 2009 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said that the decision was made after a number of residents petitioned to keep the attractive trees.
"Following a report prepared for the Inappropriate Street Tree Removal and Replacement Program, council officers sent thirty letters to the residents explaining that the liquidambars can cause infrastructure damage and offered to replace the trees with a more appropriate species.
"Only eight responses to the letters were received, three agreeing to the removal of the trees, and five against. Since a low response was considered to indicate an assent to the proposed removal, council subsequently informed residents that the trees would be removed and replaced," Cr Price explained.
"A petition to keep the trees was then established and presented to council on Monday night, indicating the majority of residents preferred the liquidambars to remain, seeing them as an enhancement to the neighbourhood. Following discussion of the petition, council agreed to retain the existing trees," Cr Price said.
"We are conscious that street trees planted many years ago are often not the best species for the roads they are in, but also that residents become very attached to the beauty of the particular trees in their local environment. Liquidambars are especially beautiful, displaying glorious colours at particular times of the year. Being able to keep the trees may mean some additional expenditure in years to come, but the fact that people can enjoy them, and feel that their presence is beneficial to the neighbourhood cannot be ignored," Cr Price said.
"Importantly, Monday’s decision indicates that processes put into place to consult with the community on such matters are effective, and residents concerns are considered valuable and taken note of when the time comes for a resolution," Cr Price added.
