Join us for National Tree Day to revegetate College ParkTree Planting event on July 29. By Portal Admin - 22nd July 2018 - Back to News Latrobe City Council is calling on the community to dig deep this month and join in a tree planting event. This year, the community planting will be held at College Park Newborough on Sunday 29 July, but there are other local events including school tree plantings.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White OAM, said the area selected for this year’s community planting was undergoing a transformation.
"College Park in Newborough has been the site of an extensive weed and revegetation program aimed at increasing local biodiversity. Volunteers have been removing the weed plant species –namely Burgan – for months now and the community is invited to help with the replanting efforts.
"Planting indigenous species will see the area act as corridor to help fauna travel through or encourage animals to stay and breed, in healthier habitat conditions. Water quality will also improve, with bank stabilisation planting.
"Healthy parks make for active people, so come down to College Park on Sunday 29 July and get your hands dirty. All equipment is supplied. We’ll even throw a snag on the barbie for you and keep you warm with hot drinks. All you need to bring is your sturdy shoes or boots, your favourite gloves and the appetite to help rehabilitate this important tract of local land," Cr White said.
Cr White added that if you can’t make to the community event, think about planting a tree or shrub in your own yard.
"Let’s green up Latrobe City and reap the benefits of a healthier environment.
The National Tree Day Community Planting will be held at College Park, Newborough on Sunday 29 July from 10am to 12.30pm. There will be a barbecue and hot drinks provided. Bring your own comfortable gloves and wear sturdy boots or shoes. The ground will be slippery.
