Gippsland Rugby League Media Release

A spectular performance by Storm against new entrants Cerberus Bulldogs last Sunday at home was a vast improvement from previous matches.

By Gippsland Rugby League Inc - 28th June 2004 - Back to News

Storms 58 – 26 loss against Bulldogs bears no indication to the match. With both sides fielding the maximum number of players permitted, Bulldogs was favourites given fitness is a priority in their field of work. Despite Storm being tipped the underdog of the competition, at the end of the day, they proved worthy opponents.

The return of centre Brett Low crossed the line untouched within minutes of the kick-off. Minutes later it was Jared Hiriaki who kept the Storm on the move, a grubber kick rebounding off the boots of a Bulldogs defender before landing in the halfback’s arms Luke Pain allowing him to score the second try. Storm set the play as Vincent Steen hammered Bulldogs defence with brut force taking two Bulldog players down with him as he crossed the line just two metres from the centre of the goal post.

With the Storm unleashing another wave of pressure, Bulldogs managed to score their first try wide. Bulldogs then picked up the pace clocking up four more tries with three conversions leading at the half time break 26 – 14.

The second half, Storm looked set to fight back with halfback Jared Hiriaki trying everything from cut out passes to cross field kicks to ignite his team. The floodgates opened when centre Reon Merrin eluded a strong defence to score.

However, the momentum swung back the Bulldogs’ way for most of the second half but not before halfback Jared Hiriaki scored the second and last try for Storm. The home side’s cause was further damaged as Bulldogs showed true form in fitness having a field day with the ball to overpower Storm by 32 points.

Next week, Storm will travel to Sunbury. With a flurry of new recruits, and the return of experience players Chris McRae, Vincent Hiriaki & Millo Fue, Storm should prove worthy opponents.
