Prizes Awarded In Morwell Landfill CompetitionAn equestrian centre, an area for active and passive recreation and an arboretum were some of the suggestions awarded competition prizes recently by the Morwell Landfill Consultative Committee. By Latrobe City - 8th September 2008 - Back to News First prize was awarded to Joy Wilson who suggested the site be developed into an equestrian centre; with second prize being shared by Sandy Giacobbe who suggested active and passive recreational areas, and Max Williamson who suggested an arboretum of tree species reflecting those that formed the many deposits of coal in the Latrobe Valley.
Latrobe City mayor and member of the Morwell Landfill Consultative Committee, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said the committee had been impressed with the great ideas from the community. "We will be considering the incorporation of these ideas for future use of the Morwell Landfill site once the rehabilitation of the site is completed," Cr Lougheed said.
The Morwell Landfill closed on 28 February 2008. The committee is now focussed on works to rehabilitate the landfill.
Manager natural environment sustainability, Matthew Peake, said work is continuing on capping the former landfill as the first step in its rehabilitation.
"It is important that the landfill is capped to ensure water cannot continue to seep through the waste which could potentially impact ground or surface waters. The works in the coming years will address the sealing of the surface of the facility and directing clean rainwater off the surface to appropriate discharge points. Measures to address landfill gas will also be incorporated into these works," Mr Peake explained.
"Once the capping and surface water controls are put in place we can begin the development of the site as a usable facility for the community," he added.
