Council requests Telstra to delay removal of payphones

Latrobe City has written to Telstra requesting that it delays the removal of eight payphones across the municipality until council has had an opportunity to review the reasons behind the removal of the phones.

The payphones nominated for removal include four in Traralgon, three in Morwell and one in Churchill.

Latrobe’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, explained that Telstra had cited four criteria on which the decision to remove the payphones would be based.

"Telstra’s standard marketing plan states that low usage over time; complaints from the community; maintenance and repair costs and increased uptake of new technology (eg. mobile phones) are the four criteria used to make a judgement on whether to remove a payphone or not.

"Latrobe City has requested Telstra’s assistance in reviewing this information in order to get a clearer picture of why these particular payphones have been targeted. We need to understand the volume of usage and the number of complaints etc so that we can share this information with the community at large," Mr Buckley said.

During Telstra’s three-month consultation period, a notice has been placed on the cabinet of the identified payphones advising of the proposed removal. The notice invites comment from users and the community.

Mr Buckley explained "We are concerned that this method of community consultation may not have been particularly effective in order to gain a total understanding of the community’s needs in regards to payphone usage. For instance, we need to take into account emergency situations that arise from time to time."

"Telstra’s review of payphones continues until the end of August. We have requested that they delay the removal of any payphones in Latrobe City until we have had a chance to review the information. We are also in the process of gathering feedback from the community and look forward to meeting with Telstra representatives to ensure a positive outcome for Latrobe City in this matter," Mr Buckley concluded.
