Gippsland › Latest news › Department of Sustainability and EnvironmentDSE Burns In Region This WeekThe Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) will be conducting a number of prescribed burns in the region this week if weather conditions are favourable. By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 27th March 2007 - Back to News Two large fuel reduction burns will be ignited 10 kilometres north west of Orbost: a 280 hectare burn at Wibenduck Creek and a 1037 hectare burn at Back Break Track.
A 65 hectare fuel reduction burn just north east of Cann River is also planned for today if weather conditions are favourable.
In the Noojee district, three regeneration burns, totalling 48 hectares will be ignited today in an area approximately seven kilometres north-west and north east of Loch Valley.
Another five regeneration burns of between 13 and 37 hectares are planned for areas in forest north-west and west of Orbost today.
A 19 hectare regeneration burn is planned eight kilometres south east of Bendoc tomorrow.
Regional Fire Manager, David Tainsh said that these burns will only proceed if weather conditions and fuel moisture readings in each area are favourable.
"To make sure they are as safe as possible, each burn is carefully planned and can only be done under particular temperatures, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and soil and fuel moisture levels," Mr Tainsh said.
"Motorists, residents and visitors in areas close to burns should be aware that smoke could be visible until this evening and the burns may still be producing smoke over the next couple of days."
DSE, Parks Victoria and VicForests firefighters will patrol the prescribed burns and surrounding areas overnight and continue to monitor all sites over the coming week.
