and that safe drinking water is delivered to all customers.

Air scouring water mains is part of Gippsland Water’s ongoing maintenance program that ensures residents continue to receive quality drinking water. Air scouring involves flushing the water mains system with a mixture of compressed air and water to remove loose sediment and build-up from within pipes. Over time, a build up of dirt can occur in the water main servicing properties.

The program was suspended in November 2006 when staged water restrictions were introduced.

Gippsland Water’s managing director John Mitchell said, "Now that Gippsland Water has lifted water restrictions, it will be implementing an air scouring and flushing program for water mains in specific towns.

"This is an operational tool to keep water supply systems clean and ensure high quality drinking water that meets Safe Drinking Water Act guidelines."

Air scouring and flushing programs are primarily used by Gippsland Water to keep water supply systems clean of sediment so that the potential for dirty water, taste and odour events in the reticulation systems are minimised, and to ensure chlorine residual in our water supply systems are maintained.

"To effectively complete the air scouring and flushing works, it is necessary for Gippsland Water to interrupt each household’s water supply at some time during this period to successfully maintain water quality for all residents," Mr Mitchell said.

"The maintenance works are not expected to last longer than two to three days in each town, with water supply interruptions in various areas likely to be three to four hours ata a time"

Customers in Thorpdale, Boolarra, Seaspray, Rawson and Traralgon South affected by the works will be notified by mail a week in advance and public notices will be placed in the local media.

To ensure residents have enough water when property mains are being air scoured, Gippsland Water recommends that customers store a sufficient amount of drinking water in the refrigerator, fill their kettle for use during the day, store enough water in containers for any cooking, ensure pets’ drinking water containers are full, and fill several buckets of water for use in flushing the toilet. Gippsland Water also recommends that customers do not turn their taps on during the maintenance works.

The air scouring program will continue throughout the Gippsland Water service area whilst Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place to ensure the ongoing supply of safe drinking water to customers.
