Wellington welcomes Minister's commitment to Central Gippsland Health ServiceBy Wellington Shire Council - 30th March 2005 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council welcomes the firm commitment given by the Victorian Minister for Health, the Hon Bronwyn Pike, to the future of the Central Gippsland Health Service – which she conveyed to a local delegation during a very positive meeting yesterday.
The meeting in Melbourne, arranged at the request of the council, involved a delegation led by Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault, and amongst those also included were two local community representatives and four local MPs: the Hon Philip Davis, Member for Gippsland Province; the Hon Peter Hall, Member for Gippsland Province; Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram; and Member for Gippsland South, Peter Ryan.
Said Mayor Peter Gault: "Our positive discussions with the Minister provided an invaluable opportunity to convey deep-rooted local concerns about the future of Central Gippsland Health Service following dismissal of the hospital board and the appointment of an administrator at the end of last year.
"It is very encouraging that she gave commitment that there would be no reduction to services or funding, but rather that she is committed to growing the Central Gippsland Health Service.
"She also made it clear that there is some flexibility in the timeframe to get a Board of Management back in place at Sale’s hospital. While the administrator has been appointed for a period of up to two years she said that she is looking to have a Board returned "sooner rather than later".
"We appreciate that there may need to be some changes to health service provision in the future to meet the changing demographics and requirements of the community, such as those caused by an ageing population for example. However we will be monitoring the situation and operation of Central Gippsland Health Service to ensure it continues to meet the needs of Sale, Wellington and eastern Gippsland and we are proposing to meet with the administrator on a regular basis to keep a close eye on progress."
