Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said winning the awards were an honour and tribute to the hard work of the community and council staff.

"The awards recognise and celebrate positive actions taken by communities to protect and enhance their local environments," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Often our efforts in sustainability are quietly spoken about – it’s not the thing our municipality is well known for, but last night’s awards are a spotlight on the tremendous work occurring across our municipality.

"Taking home the prestigious Sustainable City of the Year Award was beyond anything we could have imagined. This is a wonderful opportunity to tell the world that industry, heavy industry and a commitment to the environment are not mutually exclusive.

"These awards are a testament to our community, their commitment to the environment and their commitment to making this a better place to live and work for all of us. I am delighted that their efforts have been duly rewarded."
