New Photo Exhibition Fires Up Tyers Art Festival

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and CFA are sponsoring a new exhibition and competition at this year’s Tyers Art Festival on November 10.

The Moondarra Fire Photographic Exhibition will display photographs taken during and after the fire event, submitted by community members, fire agency staff, volunteers and other members of the public, showing their images and experiences of the fire that threatened so many homes earlier this year.

DSE’s Regional Fire Manager, David Tainsh said that the idea behind the exhibition is to encourage people to share their experiences of the Moondarra fire both through their photos and by visiting the display with friends and family.

"We want the exhibition to provide a diverse display of what was happening within and around the community during and after the fires," Mr Tainsh said.

"We hope that it will help people to talk to each other about their experiences and build an understanding of everyone's feelings about the fire - landholders, children, local retailers, CFA volunteers, DSE and Parks Victoria staff, local government and other agency staff too."

The broad categories for the exhibition have been designed to try and capture all facets of the fire and the firefight – the flames and the stories, events and people behind the flames.

There are six categories in the competition:

  • People – a community fights the fire
  • Wildlife - surviving fire
  • Regeneration - the bush recovers
  • Trucks, planes and choppers
  • Fire landscape
  • Children’s section

CFA’s Community Safety Officer, Murray Ravenhall said that DSE and CFA are encouraging all community members to submit their photographs for the exhibition, which will be judged by professional photographers, with category winners receiving generous prizes, sponsored by the firefighting agencies.

"We have also chosen this time to encourage people to begin thinking and planning for the coming fire season," Mr Ravenhall said.

"CFA and DSE will provide display material and information during the exhibition about the Moondarra Fire and about fire readiness for the coming season."

Entry forms for the Moondarra Fire Photographic Exhibition are available from the DSE offices, 71 Hotham Street, Traralgon and Parkers Corner in Erica or from CFA Regional offices in Sale, Traralgon, Morwell and Warragul.

Entry forms can be submitted to the Traralgon DSE office, 71 Hotham Street, Traralgon before October 6 and exhibits delivered to the same address by October 31.
