‘Politics in the Pub’ comes to Gippsland

Secretary of the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council, John Parker has announced a visit to the Gippsland electorate by AWU Secretary, Victorian ALP President and Labor candidate for Marybanong, Bill Shorten saying the ‘Politics in the Pub’ series was one way the Trade Union movement was trying to bring politics back to the ‘grass roots’.

Mr Parker said that Bill Shorten a trade union official, Law graduate and Master of Business was uniquely placed to represent the Australian electorate and working people into the future.

"Bill’s record in managing one of the largest unions in the country as well as representing working people is a great training ground for the role of MP and it’s great to see Bill get out of his electorate to work with campaigns in marginal and conservative seats.

"Bill has a commitment to understand the issues facing ordinary people and families in today’s Australia."

"It is widely believed that Bill will play pivotal roles in future Labor Governments," said Mr Parker.

"The Trades and Labour Council are committed to bringing politics to the people and we’re excited to begin with someone who is obviously proud of their active Trade Union background."

Mr Parker said that whilst trade union members voted for people from all political persuasions "attacks on working people in the name of the ‘draconian’ Liberal/National WorkChoices legislation have galvanised working people like no other issue for generations".

"Let’s face it." Mr Parker said, "Working people are looking for Parties and candidates who are committed to bringing back fairness and equity into Industrial Relations.  They won’t stand for extreme dogma from either side but they see that this time the Liberal/Nationals coalition have clearly gone too far in their pursuit of a blind Industrial Relations ideology"

Mr Parker said he was encouraging union members and others in the Gippsland community to come along to ‘Politics in the Pub’ in Traralgon and Sale on Wednesday night.
