What will agribusiness look like in Gippsland in 2015?

An industry forum for those involved in agribusiness and those who service agribusiness clients, is being held at 1:30pm on Wednesday 11 May at Latrobe City’s corporate headquarters in Commercial Road Morwell.

Keynote speaker, Dr Craig Shepherd from National Economics, is set to be controversial but absolutely thought provoking, predicting what will happen to Gippsland agribusiness in the next ten years.

Invest Latrobe investment manager, Leo Billington, said that the profitability and sustainability of agribusiness affects all businesses in Gippsland, from accountants and bank managers through to vets and every business and retail store in between.

"As a consequence, the future of agribusiness directly influences a town’s ability to deliver products and services used by agribusinesses. Population decline can occur if climate change and the volatility of world markets impact negatively on the agribusiness sector," Mr Billington said.

"Monash University through Gippsland Regional Information Service has calculated that for every $1 income for farmers there is a direct $2.64 benefit in Gippsland.

"Dr Shepherd is currently principal economist with National Economics, Melbourne. Dr Shepherd is well known for his regional economic database called ‘YourPlace’. His research highlights the impacts of regional shifts in population throughout regional Australia," Mr Billington explained.

"To highlight his detailed analysis of population data, Dr Shepherd has travelled extensively around numerous towns and regions of Australia.

"This is a forum not to be missed for those who either work in or service the agribusiness industry," Mr Billington added.
