Latrobe City Council will host a public information session on Wednesday, 20 July for residents considering standing for council in the upcoming elections.

Latrobe City Council’s chief executive officer, Gary Van Driel, said standing for council was a relatively simple process, but could be daunting if you were not certain what was required or how to nominate and campaign.

"The information session will outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected," Mr Van Driel said.

"I strongly encourage any residents contemplating standing for election to attend this information session."

Speakers from neighbouring councils and the Municipal Association of Victoria will provide information about the council area, and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.

"A video presentation Q&A with councillors from other municipalities will assist prospective candidates to gain an understanding of what the public will expect of you as a councillor, time commitments, challenges and rewards," Mr Van Driel said.

The free session will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions. In keeping with Council’s privacy policy, all registrations and enquires will be treated in the strictest confidence.

The information session for prospective candidates will be held on Wednesday, 20 July from 7pm to 9pm at Nambur Wariga Meeting Room at Council Headquarters, 141 Commercial Road, Morwell.
