Health services must remain says Ingram

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the Health Minister, Bronwyn Pike, to immediately address funding issues at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service, which may result in loss of service from current GPs and surgeons.

"Problems associated with the WEIS funding models for BRHS have resulted in the hospital board adopting recommendations to close 10 beds and reduce the range of operations at the hospital.

"This decision contradicts the direction and the needs of our community.

"East Gippsland is a regional area that is increasing in population and this increase is largely older, self-funded retirees

"The BRHS has been increasing its visiting specialist surgical capacities to better meet the needs of our area.

"This is combined with the work of the hospital, governments and most importantly the doctors over the past 20 years to improve the quality and range of medical services provided at the hospital.

"I understand that the department has conducted a review of the future health needs of the district and that report has recognised the increased needs for surgical capacity at the BRHS, but funding problems mean this cannot presently be achieved.

"I have urged the Health Minister to address the problem without delay," Mr Ingram concluded.
