Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said two different types of floating wetlands would be installed.

"This will help us to better understand the performance of these types of systems. Floating wetlands have the potential to decrease the nutrient load in the discharge waters from the wetlands. This is due to the increased surface area of the root systems present into the water.

"The bacteria that live on the root systems of these floating plants are what helps to clean the water. Although wetlands can function without the floating portion, we are keen to use this advanced technique," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Council has partnered with Federation University to undertake a detailed study of the water treatment.  A team of engineering students, led by Dr Harpreet Kandra and Dr Susanga Costa, will monitor the water quality throughout the wetlands to determine the effectiveness of the wetlands in general, as well as the floating wetlands we are currently installing.

"This is an exciting collaboration with the university. Having data available to evaluate the effectiveness of the wetlands will provide us with a measureable outcome of the benefits of this project. And the students will gain invaluable, practical experience," Cr O’Callaghan said.
