Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of $7.5M in funding for stage one of the Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation Project.

By Latrobe City - 31st July 2013 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that Council was delighted that the Federal Government had committed the funds.

"This is one of three major projects that Council is committed to delivering. The project has been discussed with both Federal and State Governments for a number of years and we are pleased that this substantial allocation of funding will enable stage one of the project to be commenced.

"It’s great news for the people of Moe, for the wider Latrobe City community and for the region. Construction projects like this boost the local and wider economies, provide jobs for local workers, boost confidence and pride in the area and generally lift the spirits. It’s wonderful that our persistence in pursuing funding which has been supported strongly by the community has finally paid off," Cr Kam said.

"Stage one of the project has a focus on the Civic Building and Plaza Works on the southern side of George Street. The total cost of this stage is $14.3M. We hope to source the balance of funding from the State Government and from our own capital works budget.

"We anticipate that we can deliver the completion of stage one over two years, with a completion date scheduled for late 2015, dependent on the balance of funding being made available," Cr Kam said.

"The remainder of the project would be completed in stage two. These are works including the youth precinct, the Moore Street Shared Zone and the public park land area. The commuter car park that is there at present will remain in its current state until stage two is undertaken. Council has an allocation in its long term financial plan for stage two works and will continue to endeavour to access other external funding in the hope that we can deliver these elements in the near future.

"This announcement allows us to commence stage one. We will now process funding agreements as soon as possible with a view to commencing a comprehensive tendering process in the near future," Cr Kam concluded.
