Wood Street Intersection Dangerous: Hall

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province Peter Hall says a highway intersection in Bairnsdale is potentially dangerous and needs upgrading as a matter of urgency.

By Peter Hall - 4th August 2005 - Back to News

Mr Hall said the intersection of Wood St and Princes Highway was difficult to negotiate during peak periods and he has asked VicRoads to consider installing traffic lights.

"It is a busy intersection and it’s not always easy to detect oncoming traffic because of the hill on one side and the bend in the road in the other direction," Mr Hall said.

"I have received letters from motorists who have had near misses at the intersection and I think it’s time VicRoads looked at installing traffic lights."

Mr Hall said he had raised the issue with VicRoads’ Gippsland Chief Executive David Anderson and had been advised that the intersection had been identified for future safety improvements.

"Mr Anderson has told me that a traffic count was undertaken earlier this year along with a detailed survey of the intersection and approaches," Mr Hall said.

"VicRoads says it will consider various options for improvements and then submit the plans to the government for prioritising in future works programs.

"I believe the intersection needs urgent improvements and should be given the highest priority.

"I intend to write to the Transport Minister to raise my concerns and I would encourage any interested motorists to contact me with their views, for inclusion in my letter to the Minister."
