Liberal Nationals will deliver faster, reliable rail for Gippsland
Business case for a dedicated rail line for regional trains through Melbourne’s south east metropolitan system.
A Liberal Nationals Government will complete a business case for a new, dedicated rail line for regional trains through Melbourne’s south east metropolitan system to make services faster and more reliable for Gippsland passengers.
A dedicated line would mean an end to Gippsland passengers being delayed and frustrated when regional trains travelling to and from Melbourne get stuck behind metro trains that stop at all suburban stations.
The Andrews Labor Government’s rushed, ill-conceived Sky Rail infrastructure has constrained potential future improvement options for Gippsland.
The Liberal Nationals are committed to delivering better rail services for the people of Gippsland, and we will provide $8 million for this business case.
Victoria’s unprecedented population growth is placing more strain on our existing passenger rail network. Gippsland is no exception.
According to Public Transport Victoria, just 48.1 per cent of Bairnsdale services and 76.6 per cent of Gippsland services arrived on time in June this year – far short of the 92 per cent target. In the same month, 49 services were cancelled.
Our regional rail commitments also include a $633 million investment to deliver faster, more comfortable and more reliable trains for country passengers.

Gippsland passengers deserve better than the raw deal they’re getting from Daniel Andrews’ citycentric Labor Government.
We’ll do the work needed to deliver better rail services for the people of Gippsland, to connect these communities with each other and with Melbourne.
Comment attributable to Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis
Labor has been in government for 14 of the last 18 years and has consistently taken communities in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland for granted.
Only a Liberal Nationals Government will deliver better train services for regional centres including Morwell, Traralgon, Sale and Bairnsdale.
Comment attributable to The Nationals Candidate for Morwell Sheridan Bond
Morwell and Traralgon passengers are sick and tired of the constant delays, constant cancellations and being forced onto replacement bus services.
I understand the frustration of our community only too well, and that’s why we’re going to investigate the best options for improvements to make sure our rail commuters get where they need to be, when they need to be there, without delays.
Comment attributable to Liberal Candidate for Morwell Dale Harriman
Gippsland is a great place to live and work but we must keep ahead of population growth by building new transport infrastructure.
As I speak to locals in the community they tell me their top three issues are crime, cost of living and upgraded public transport.
