Good access is good business - information session

Latrobe City Council is holding an information session on Tuesday 2 September for Morwell traders, as part of the ‘Good Access is Good Business’ initiative, aimed at assisting traders to improve customer access to their businesses.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that Council was working in partnership with the Morwell Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Access Audits Australia to present the session.

"Over a third of the Victorian population experience disability, either permanent or temporary. Consequently, they choose their shopping, business and tourist destinations according to ease of access and quality of service," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Good access is not just about wheelchair access. People with visual impairments or hearing difficulties, parents of young children and a significantly increasing number of older adults also experience access issues. This is a sufficiently large cross section of the population who consider ease of access when taking a trip to the shops or booking a holiday," Cr Middlemiss continued.

"By holding this session, we can highlight the importance of access to the traders and businesses, giving them the information and resources required to assist them to better meet the needs of existing customers. We can also help them to keep pace with the changing demographics of their customer base," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"It makes good business sense to ensure products and services are available to all members of the community," Cr Middlemiss said.

Councillor Darrell White, a Case Manager with Latrobe Personnel which specialises in disability employment services, said he recognised the value of the initiative.

"Working on a day to day basis with people of varying abilities draws attention to a number of impediments that many of us remain unaware of, because they don’t necessarily impact on our own lifestyle. There are not just physical barriers to accessing some businesses to be considered by traders, but also issues that people with a sight or hearing impairment find important. Solutions to these are being addressed at the information session," Cr White explained.

Sandra Larsen, proprietor of Sandra Larsen’s Jewellers in Commercial Road, Morwell has openly embraced the ‘Good Access Is Good Business’ concept.

"As a family orientated jewellery store, we designed the shop to have good access for everybody, parents with prams, people with wheelchairs, elderly customers. We have ensured a good flow for people moving around the store, as well as thinking about security issues," Ms Larsen said.

Graeme Sennett, spokesperson for the Morwell Chamber of Commerce and Industry agreed that it was not only a business owner’s responsibility to provide good access, but it made good business sense too.

"Traders need to take responsibility to provide a full range of services to all members of the community. Good access is a simple way of being able to provide those services and generate additional business," Mr Sennett said.

The Morwell information session follows on from the successful information session held in Moe earlier this year. A third session is scheduled for Traralgon traders on 7 October.

Cr Middlemiss urged all traders in Morwell to attend this upcoming session.

"Take a look at your own premises in relation to access, come to the information session and together we can make Morwell a great place to shop, with ease of access for all," Cr Middlemiss concluded.

The free information session will be held at the Italian Australian Sporting Club on Tuesday 2 September between 6pm and 8pm. Finger food and drinks will be served from 6pm. Traders wishing to attend can register their attendance by calling Latrobe City on 1300 367 700.
