Grand reopening for refurbished Performing Arts CentreThe newly refurbished Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon will reopen on Friday 16 May with a free gala concert and an official opening ceremony by Councillor Sheridan Bond, representing the Mayor, and State Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins. By Latrobe City - 14th May 2003 - Back to News The $1m refurbishment has included changes to the building such as the installation of a new foyer and a retractable raked seating system, a larger back stage area, a new look for the building’s exterior and increased accessibility to the Centre for people in wheelchairs, and was made possible by funding from Arts Victoria and a significant contribution from Latrobe City Council.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that the new look Centre not only provided the community with a great venue to watch performances, but ensured that the performers themselves had first-class facilities to use.
"A visit to the new Centre will definitely impress. The new look both inside and out has lent the Centre a contemporary feel and created a dynamic atmosphere for performing arts," Cr Middlemiss said.
Mr Jenkins said that given the improved facilities, Latrobe City Performing Arts Centre will undoubtedly attract many more visiting regional and national performers, and become a celebrated venue for audiences from around Gippsland.
"Our own home grown talent will also flourish. Having such a prestigious venue on the doorstep will ensure that local arts groups and performers have a great place to showcase their abilities. I am especially pleased that the opening Gala Concert will reflect this local talent," Mr Jenkins said.
Latrobe City’s Arts Manager, Paul Holton said that following the official opening ceremony, the Concert would comprise performances from local performing arts groups.
"Appearing during the evening, will be talented artists from the Latrobe Theatre Company, The Yallourn Madrigals, The Latrobe City Band, The Latrobe Orchestra, and The Gippsland Acoustic Music Club. The concert will also feature members and past winners of the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod, as well as the Julie Ryan Dancers. MC for night will be Barry Whitehead," Mr Holton said.
Cr Bond said that she was looking forward to watching the best local talent perform in the wonderful new surroundings.
"The refurbished Performing Arts Centre really is a great community asset that will be enjoyed by performers and audiences alike for many years to come," Cr Bond concluded.
The Gala Concert starts at 7.30pm and is open to the public, but numbers are limited so bookings are essential. Telephone 1300 367 700 to secure a ticket.
