By Latrobe Shire Council - 20th December 2004 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the tournament had been held at Traralgon for 12 years and had recently been upgraded to Level One status.
"This means the event is the only Level One junior tournament in the world to be held in a regional city. The upgraded status should attract higher ranked players adding further prestige to the event," Cr White explained.
"As well as putting Latrobe City on the tennis map the event is a real boost for the economy with the players, families and entourage staying and spending in Traralgon and surrounding areas. We know that the players and coaches enjoy coming to the area and the Traralgon Tennis Association should be commended for its dedication and commitment to the event," Cr White said.
Loy Yang Power Chief Executive Ian Nethercote praised Tennis Australia for its commitment to holding the event in a regional area.
"Loy Yang Power is proud to be involved with such a well run event and the achievement of the Level One status is testimony to the efforts of the organisers and to the world class facilities available at Traralgon," Mr Nethercote said.
"This tournament has become part of the journey for tomorrow’s tennis champions," Mr Nethercote added.
Traralgon Tennis Association President, Graham Charlton, encouraged local residents to go and watch the world class sporting event.
"Entry is free and there is plenty of under cover seating now available at the Traralgon Tennis Complex. It is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Gippsland to see top class tennis in their own backyard," Mr Charlton said.
Mr Charlton added that past competitors had included Lleyton Hewitt, Roger Federer, Nicholas Escude and Jelena Dokic.
"These players are now at the pinnacle of their sport, demonstrating the exceptional quality of players participating in the Traralgon event," Mr Charlton said.
Councillor White said that Latrobe City was delighted to be working with Loy Yang Power and the Traralgon Tennis Association in bringing a world class sporting event to Latrobe City.
"Latrobe City is fast gaining a reputation as a quality regional host for major sporting events. We have hosted events such as the Herald Sun Tour, the Great Victorian Bike Ride and the Victorian Rally Championships, as well as a diverse range of other sporting tournaments in athletics, lawn bowls, golf, waterskiing, sailing and karting. Latrobe City has also recently announced it will hold the Southern University Games in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
"We have top class facilities across a wide range of sports and can continue to attract major sporting events in the future," Cr White concluded.
