Latrobe City Mayor Praises Victoria Police

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Lisa Price today commended Victoria Police on their handling of the ‘Switch Off Hazelwood’ protest over the weekend.

By Latrobe City Council - 16th September 2009 - Back to News

"The Police Service did an outstanding job in managing the protest and protecting assets in and around the Latrobe Valley.

"Clearly police saw the potential for the demonstration to lead to some serious incidents and took the steps necessary to ensure our community and its infrastructure was protected."

"The response by officers at the weekend was well coordinated, professional and appropriate to the task at hand.

"On behalf of Latrobe City, I would like to thank all our men and women in uniform for being prepared to put their personal safety on the line to keep our community safe."

Mayor, Cr Price said that the protest unfairly taints the reputation of the Latrobe Valley as a place where climate change is denied.

"Latrobe City is an environmentally aware community, it’s a community which cherishes the environment and which is actively working towards reducing carbon emissions.

"The Latrobe City is working hard to position the Latrobe Valley for the transition to a low carbon economy and is activity working with State and Federal Governments to ensure that the local economy can complete this transition in a positive and meaningful way.

"Our strength is in our resilience and we must find positive ways of taking action during times of change.

"The Latrobe City has a number of initiatives driving this change including the Climate Change Committee.

"The Committee is looking at the issues around climate change and how our community can best work to effectively support a move to a low carbon economy.

"Local action by local people is what will support this community in its transition, not the reckless actions of protestors intent on arrest and disruption.

"Protests such as this only serve to divert police resources from other areas of need and in the end are a disservice to not only the Latrobe Valley but the wider Victorian community."
