Council Acts on Murray Goulburn Lab Closure

Wellington Shire Council will ask for discussions with Murray Goulburn and the state government as part of its efforts to develop an economic action plan in response to the closure of the Murray Goulburn laboratory in Yarram.

By Wellington Shire Council - 5th September 2007 - Back to News

"While we respect the right of Murray-Goulburn to make this decision it is still a major blow for Yarram," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"This has big impacts for the affected employees, service providers and the wider Yarram community.

"Wellington Shire Council is keen to develop a response that will help minimize the economic impacts on Yarram and is particularly interested in attracting alternative business," said Cr Ripper.

Wellington Shire Council hopes that Murray-Goulburn will also wish to reduce the local consequences of its decision and will support proposals such as an alternative commercial use for their current site.

A meeting is being sought with Murray Goulburn's management at the earliest opportunity to find out its intentions for the site.

"Council does not want the site mothballed and wants it to be available for other uses, particularly those with a positive employment outcome," said Cr Ripper.

Wellington Shire Council looks forward to working with Murray-Goulburn to work through the current situation as a matter of the highest priority.

In the short term, the Mayor said a local resource is available through Julie Nethercote, the StreetLife officer based in Yarram.

"Ms Nethercote is available to help the business community plan new events and initiatives that will generate more economic activity in the town," said Cr Ripper.

Council's Economic Development staff have already briefed State and Commonwealth Government agencies about the Murray-Goulburn closure and will be seeking further meetings as more information becomes available.
