Sports Centre Included In Major Projects Spend

Construction of a new indoor Sports and Recreation Centre in Bairnsdale received the ‘green light’ at last night’s Council meeting.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 24th December 2008 - Back to News

East Gippsland Shire Councillors voted to allocate $700,000 to the project that will be completed by September 2009.

Funding for the new centre will be sourced from the Federal Government’s recently announced Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program 2008-09 stimulus package.

The centre will be constructed at the Lucknow Football Reserve on the northeastern outskirts of Bairnsdale and will provide facilities for squash and indoor bowls as well as table tennis.

East Gippsland Shire was recently awarded $1.573 million that must be spent on additional ready-to-proceed community infrastructure projects that can be completed by the end of September 2009. Of this amount $700,000 will be spent on the new sports centre.

Other programs to benefit from the funding include the development of walking tracks and footpaths as recently recommended by Shire’s Disability Advisory Committee. An amount $623,000 will be devoted to this program.

A building relocation and upgrade for the Bruthen Arts and Information Centre will receive $150,000 and a program to provide water saving features to Council owned public amenities would be allocated $100,000.
