The project will enhance the safety and amenity of the area, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the project would involve the installation of up to 60 lights along the existing pedestrian pathway on the west side of Waterhole Creek.

"Lighting will be installed near the southern boundary of the traffic school and continue to the existing lights at MERA Park, Morwell East, a distance of around 1.5 kilometres.

"We believe the project will enhance safety along the route with better visibility and improved surveillance, and we hope there will also be a corresponding increase in the perception of safety and security for residents living nearby or those using the cultural walk, fitness stations, tables and benches or the BMX track," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Additionally, improved lighting will provide safer transport links, at dusk or after dark, for community members to access recreational and social facilities, including sporting clubs, community group activities, after school programs, the retail area or leisure facilities. This will, in turn, provide greater opportunity for increased activity in the area leading to greater community connectedness, community presence and feelings of safety and security for vulnerable groups and people.

"Latrobe City Council has long advocated for higher levels of participation in recreational and community activities which improve mental and emotional health and wellbeing. This sort of project is vital to ensuring that local Morwell residents feel safe when they access and engage in activities.

"The project has really been a collaboration of many organisations and groups.

Support came from Morwell Park Primary School, Morwell Neighbourhood House, Morwell Neighbourhood Watch – Safer Communities Group, as well as several surrounding recreational, sporting groups and clubs and residents living in the Morwell East area. We also acknowledge Darren Chester, Federal Member for Gippsland, Russell Northe, Member for Morwell and the Victoria Police for their support.

"As for timeframes, Latrobe City Council has commenced discussions with VicRoads about the lighting to be installed in the vicinity of Princes Drive. We have appointed a contractor for the lighting design, due for completion by January 2017. Following this, a tender process for the installation of lighting will be carried out by March 2017 with installation completed by October 2017," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
