Information Sessions On Proposals For Planning SchemeA number of information sessions providing land owners and developers with information on proposed changes to the Latrobe Planning Scheme, are being held in Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Churchill early in November. By Latrobe City - 10th October 2008 - Back to News Council recently agreed to invite submissions on proposed planning scheme amendments (Amendment C62), changes which are designed to provide greater certainty to land owners and developers.
Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said the existing Latrobe Planning Scheme reflects the ideals for the municipality in the late 1990's and had become outdated.
"The existing scheme does not reflect the significant socio-economic growth that has occurred since the scheme was written; the strategic objectives and the vision of Latrobe 2021; and other adopted strategic studies.
"The proposed changes will reflect the current climate as well as providing clear strategies for future growth in Latrobe City," Mr Buckley said.
Mr Buckley said the proposed changes reflect the strategic objectives and the vision of Latrobe 2021 by aligning the structure of the new scheme to the themes of natural environment sustainability, built environment sustainability, economic sustainability, and liveability.
"The proposed scheme provides a balanced consideration of these themes when facilitating development in Latrobe City," Mr Buckley said.
The proposed changes also update the Network City concept; directing growth to key townships through up-to-date structure plans; ensuring an adequate supply of land for development - especially housing; encouraging medium density housing in the main townships; preparing town centre strategies in the main townships; providing rural lifestyle opportunities at appropriate locations; protecting significant vegetation, biodiversity values and water quality; and balancing the demand for significant coal resource and settlement growth.
They also reflect other adopted strategic studies including council’s Structure Plans for Churchill, Moe/Newborough, Morwell and Traralgon; the Moe Activity Centre Plan; the Churchill Town Centre Plan; the Transit Centred Precinct Reports Moe/Newborough, Morwell and Traralgon 2004 and 2006; and council’s Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy.
Mr Buckley said the proposed changes don’t modify existing zones or overlays, so no-one will suddenly find their land is zoned differently. "Any changes to zones and overlays will be pursued as separate planning scheme amendments in the future and there will be full and open consultation on any that might be proposed," Mr Buckley added.
Information sessions are by appointment and can be made between the hours of 10am and 7pm – on Monday 3 and Wednesday 5 November at the Traralgon Service Centre; on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 November at Green Inc Churchill; on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 November at the Moe Town Hall; on Wednesday 12 at the Morwell Court House; and on Friday 14 in the Nambur Wariga Room at the Council Corporate Headquarters, Morwell.
Further information on the workshops and Amendment C62 is available from Lorrae Dukes at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700, or from council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au. The closing date for submissions is Friday 12 December 2008.
