Update on Gippsland Fires

Sunday, 22 January 2006 1600hrs

By DSE & CFA - 23rd January 2006 - Back to News

The following roads are now closed due to the Moondarra fire north of Moe:

Moe-Erica Road

Erica-Walhalla Road

Walhalla-Tyers Road is closed

Cowwarr-Erica Road is closed

Access over the Blue Rock Dam wall at Spillway road

Tanjil Bren Road at Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road

Access into the forest north of Hunters Road

Residents in the Yallourn North, Tyers, Tanjil South, Moondarra, Coopers Creek and Jacobs Creek areas (south of Erica) have been advised that they will be experiencing ember attack from the fire, which is now three kilometres from Yallourn North.

Fire behaviour is extreme and spotovers are building in size and intensity.

There are currently six other going fires in the Gippsland region:

DSE firefighters are being assisted by CFA crews at the Postmans Spur fire, 11 kilometres south west of Tubbut. This fire is still at 0.2 hectares and being bombed by aircraft.

In the Cann River fire district, three small fires 17 kilometres north of Cann River and 17 kilometres north of Club Terrace are mostly tracked and have plenty of DSE resources on them.

There is a small fire at Wild Cow, 19 kilometres north west of Orbost. A firebomber is on its way to this fire.

At Quire Road, 11 kilometres south west of Buchan, a fuel reduction burn conducted in spring is helping with the control of the fire.

No private property is under threat from these fires.

Further information can be obtained by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667 or listening to ABC radio on 100.7FM.
