Council welcomes Location of Court–Police Complex

Morwell will be the location for the Latrobe Valley Court and Police complex.

By Latrobe City Council - 27th July 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the State Government’s announcement that Morwell will be the location for the Latrobe Valley Court and Police complex.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said the central location would provide more equitable access to legal facilities for the whole of Gippsland whilst also providing opportunities to enhance the Morwell CBD.

"Latrobe has put together a land package in the Morwell CBD that we believe will become the most obvious choice for the Government to embrace as the site for the legal precinct. Latrobe House and the existing library will be surplus to Council's needs once the new corporate headquarters is completed, and it makes great sense to embrace the existing courthouse with land which will then become available," Cr Jenkins said.

"While there will obviously need to be a detailed investigation of the site, and further consultation over a number of issues, we are confident given the potential benefits of the Hazelwood Road and Ann Street site, that the Government will make it their preferred choice.

This all consolidates the revitalisation of the Morwell precinct and is a key outcome proposed by the Morwell CBD Revitalisation Action Plan," Cr Jenkins added.
