Latrobe City combines forces on Valley PlanCouncil join with Latrobe Valley business and community representatives to put together Latrobe Valley Plan submission to State Government’s Ministerial Taskforce. By Latrobe City Council - 5th February 2001 - Back to News Latrobe City Council has joined forces with business and community representatives from across the Latrobe Valley to put together a Latrobe Valley Plan for submission to the State Government’s Ministerial Taskforce.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning said that Council was working with representatives of business groups, key businesses and community organisations on a comprehensive strategy and plan of action, which brought together a wide range of ideas, and provided realistic solutions for creating a vibrant future for Latrobe.
“It is vital that we are able to put forward a cohesive vision to the Government for developing and revitalising our Valley, creating economic activity and jobs, and strengthening social and community supports for our people,” Cr Hanning said.
“The Premier complimented Latrobe when he set up the taskforce, recognising the extent of the difficulties faced by this community as well as the multi-billion dollar windfall the State had received from electricity privatisation. This government has indicated they will return some of that windfall to the Latrobe community.
“There is tremendous commitment to achieving the best outcomes for the region, and this is already being demonstrated by the good-will extended by all the parties who are working together.
“The development of this Plan does not preclude any individual group from putting in a submission to the Ministerial Taskforce. The interesting thing, however, is that we all have similar ideas about what is going to make a difference to the development of our municipality. We all recognise that this area is unique, needing special solutions to overcome the economic damage of the past,” Cr Hanning said.
“We are not starting with a blank slate. A huge amount of work has already been done on developing strategies and plans for Latrobe, and submissions have already been made to both the State and Federal Governments. So it is a matter of pulling this all together in one comprehensive plan.
“There is a clear and unanimous support for the development of an Energy Park, to build on our position as the producer of the majority of the State’s electricity. We expect the Government to begin the real development there in the very short term. Value-adding timber, dairy and agricultural products, and improving the attractiveness and image of the area to investors and visitors are also key objectives, but there is much more,” Councillor Hanning said.
“I feel extremely confident that the opportunity provided to us by the Ministerial Taskforce will lead to real change and development, and an improvement in the Latrobe Valley’s fortunes.
“I invite everyone to get behind creating the plan of action to make Latrobe the great place we know it can be,” Councillor Hanning concluded.
