Gippsland VTU Seeking EmployersOn the lookout for employers interested in hiring a person with a disability By Eimear McNelis - 16th July 2002 - Back to News The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit (GVTU) is seeking employers in the Warragul area who are interested in hiring a person with a disability.
The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit is a community based agency in Gippsland. The service developed by the agency is unique, in that it is specifically designed to facilitate opportunities for young people aged 15-26 in rural communities to access vocational education, employment and personal development training in their community.
"We have many students from Warragul that are seeking employment in the area," said Leanne Bruce from the Gippsland Vocational Training Unit.
"Studies have shown that workers with a disability are consistently amongst the most productive and loyal employees, and have less days off on average than other workers."
Ms Bruce said that young people with disabilities may be beneficial to companies as they often fill difficult or high turnover positions.
"Statistics show that 98% of staff with a disability rate average or better in work place safety, 90% of people with a disability rated average or better on job performance and 86% of people with disabilities rated average or better on attendance," said Ms Bruce.
The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit also delivers training for young people including an ‘Employability Skills – Becoming a Worker’ program, which is designed to assist participants to get a job by developing their job seeking skills.
The full program runs for 20 weeks and modules covered in course include: the team and you, vocational awareness, finding that job, workplace communication, occupational health and safety, managing as a worker, personal presentation and development, money and budgeting, interview skills, preparing for work and work ethics.
