Contracts Signed On New Traralgon Early Learning Centre Site

Contracts have been signed on the new Traralgon Early Learning Centre in Mapleson Drive in anticipation that the new occasional care and preschool centre will be ready to accept children by January 2010.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th December 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City chief executive officer, Mr Paul Buckley, said that the signing ended three years of planning and community consultation for new premises to replace the current Franklin Street facility.

"I am pleased to announce that contracts have been signed enabling Latrobe City Council to purchase the former Traralgon Early Education Centre in Mapleson Drive Traralgon, from the Stable Property Group.

"As part of the purchase contract a new car park is being constructed and the playground will be increased in size. Construction of the car park will commence in the coming weeks to ensure that the facility will be operational by January 2010," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said that the site was selected by Council in February 2009 as the preferred location for the TELC redevelopment project.

"There was an extensive community consultation and planning process which included consideration of over 20 potential sites across Traralgon. The Mapleson Drive facility had the advantage of already operating as an existing childcare centre as well as the potential for redevelopment to incorporate the specific needs of the TELC without impacting on existing public open space.

"The new centre will be a welcome addition to our diverse and high quality childcare and preschool portfolio that covers the whole municipality," Cr Price said.

Dunbar Ward Councillor, Rohan Fitzgerald said that the Mapleson Drive site would be able to integrate additional capacity for the Traralgon Early Learning Centre with a new preschool for Traralgon.

"This will help us meet growing demand in the city for occasional care and preschool places. Further, it will allow an expansion of three-year-old preschool places in Traralgon.

"With its proximity to the CBD and other educational facilities, this particular site offered considerable value for money over other options for the redevelopment," Cr Fitzgerald concluded.
