Latrobe City Council has appointed its committee members for the Low Carbon Emissions Future Transition Committee which will be chaired by mayor, Councillor Darrell White.

By Latrobe City - 14th February 2011 - Back to News

The adopted terms of reference for the committee provide for representatives from local firms both large and small, government departments, unions and other relevant committees. The committee will hold its first meeting in April this year.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Council was delighted with the number of high-calibre individuals who expressed an interest in the committee.

"As well as Crs Price, Fitzgerald and Vermeulen, representation on the committee covers the sectors of power generation, engineering, small business, manufacturing, education, forestry and agriculture. It also includes unions and relevant state and commonwealth departments.

"The development of this committee is one of the big ticket items of our policy Positioning Latrobe City for a Low Carbon Emission Future and its role is to monitor the progress and effectiveness of the policy and to ensure that it remains proactive.

"The policy was the first of its kind developed by an Australian Council and ensures that Latrobe City, and the Gippsland region, are in a position to lead the transformation; at both local community and regional level," Cr White said.

The policy was developed to provide Council with an overarching framework to systematically overcome the challenges and maximise the opportunities that may be presented by a carbon constrained economy.

"This Committee will help Council drive the transformation at a local community and regional level and will play a strong role in advocating on behalf of the community; it could also prove to be a ‘one-stop-shop’ for the Victorian and Australian Governments," Cr White concluded.

The committee members appointed by Council include Latrobe City mayor Cr Darrell White; Cr Ed Vermeulen; Cr Lisa Price; Cr Rohan Fitzgerald; Clean Coal Victoria Advisory Committee chair Ms Kellie O’Callaghan; Loy Yang Power‘s Simon Vanderzalm; Safetech’s David Wakefield; HVP Plantations’ Owen Trumper, Alstom’s Jason Price; Agribusiness Gippsland’s deputy chair Dr Robin Lawson; Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive general manager Richard Berriman; Australian Metal Workers Union’s Steve Dodds; Gippsland Trades and Labour Council’s Valerie Prokopiv; Monash University Gippsland Campus head of school of applied science and engineering Prof. Mark Sandeman; GippsTAFE general manager corporate services Mr Jim Vivian; and RMIT school of management international employment relations Prof. Peter Fairbrother.
