Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has called on Latrobe Valley communities to search out their best and brightest initiatives and enter the Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities Awards.

By Russell Northe - 11th February 2011 - Back to News

"The awards, run under Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria are about showcasing community spirit and pride by highlighting the everyday actions Victorians take to enhance and protect their local environment," Mr Northe said.

"They provide an opportunity for all levels of the community – councils and shires, local community and sporting groups, schools and even individuals to have their efforts in improving, maintaining and sustaining their local environments recognised."

Mr Northe said with a number of categories available within the Tidy Towns – Sustainability Communities Awards, there is an opportunity for many groups to enter their sustainable, environmental and community-based actions.

"There are ten award categories, the prestigious Dame Phyllis Frost Award, and the overall Victorian Tidy Town of the Year Award that communities can enter," he said.

"Efforts recognised by the awards include reducing waste, preserving heritage, saving energy and water conservation initiatives."

"Entering the awards has many benefits, such as increased community participation and pride, ownership and responsibility of local environments, and increased local tourism. It is a fantastic way to show your support of your town and be actively involved within the community.

"In 2009 Yallourn North was a finalist in many categories, including Heritage and Culture (for the Yallourn North Historical Society and Old Brown Coal Mine Museum), Protection of the Environment (Revegetation of the old Yallourn North Tip Site), Community Government Partnership (Town Entrances Project) and Overall State Finalists.

"Latrobe City also received a finalist position in the Pam Keating Environmental Innovation category for the New Landfill Facility.

"These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise community efforts, and I highly encourage all community members to think about what they are proud of in their towns."

Entries for the Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities Awards open on February 28 and close on June 3. For further information or to enter the awards please visit www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/kabv.
