Fire Bugs

Summer is the time of the year when the risk of potential bushfires is at the highest level. Fire fighters and other Emergency Service members constantly put their lives at risk whilst fighting fires that are often deliberately lit by arsonists, commonly known as "Fire Bugs".

Victoria has approximately 7.7 million hectares of State Forest, National Parks and other reserves. It is estimated that around 620 bushfires occur, burning about 110,000 hectares, on an average summer. Research over a twenty year period by the Department of Sustainability has found that 25% of fires occurring on public land in Victoria were deliberately lit.

Fire Restrictions:

One strategy designed to minimise the incidence of fires during high-risk periods is "Fire Restrictions". When Fire restrictions are in force, permits to light fires are required.

Total Fire Bans:

The use or lighting of all fire is prohibited during Total Fire Bans. Total Fire Bans are enforced when fire danger is very high and it is expected that potential fires would be extremely difficult to contain.

What can you do:

Be aware of enforced Fire restrictions and Total fire Bans.

If you see a fire during a day of Total Fire Ban, report it.

Warn children against the dangers of playing with fire. Curious children who are fascinated by fire have accidentally started many fires.

PartySafe:

Are you hosting a party to celebrate the years end? You can help make your social occasion run smoothly by registering the event with the local police on the Party Safe register. The register is aimed at reducing the incidence of gate crashing and anti social behaviour at parties and social functions.

All you need to do is fill in the PartySafe registration form available from your local police station, and return it at least one week before your party is being held.

The registration form and poster and other material can also be downloaded and printed from the Neighbourhood Watch website. Go to www.neighbourhoodwatch.com.au click on the Latest News, scroll down to Party Safe.

Camping Grounds:

Going camping or caravanning over the holidays here are some things to watch out for.

Many camping sites are like a smorgasbord of goodies to a thief - wet suits, surfboards, fishing gear, boats, and televisions in annexes or tents. Thieves don’t take holidays!

Some people leave behind their rational thinking on holidays. When camping, expose as little property as you can, and put everything inside your van, tent or car. If leaving the camp site for awhile, tell a neighbour you are expecting nobody and would they keep an eye out.

Boat trailers have been stolen from boat ramps while the owners are out enjoying their spot of fishing. You can always chain your boat trailer to your car, while you are on the water. Lock your outboard motor to your boat when parked at your camp site.

Remember! Thieves don’t take holidays.
