Upsurge in patronage at new Traralgon Library

Relocation of the Traralgon library to the newly developed premises in the civic precinct has resulted in a significant increase in patronage of the library facilities.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st March 2006 - Back to News

According to Latrobe City’s community information manager, Valma Warren, more than five hundred new members have joined the library since its relocation, compared to just 200 new members for the same period last year.

"In the three months since relocation, the use of internet services, and attendance at preschool and holiday story sessions, have all increased. There has also been a 26% increase in borrowings of books, CDs and other library materials over the last three months. In discussing this trend with library customers, we are told it’s because of the spacious relaxing environment that has been created which encourages people to enjoy their reading selections." Ms Warren said.

"The new library is so spacious that people no longer have to queue to access the shelves, which was the case at the Breed Street premises, and that’s reflected in the huge 42% increase in non-fiction borrowings. Loans of ‘talking books’, which are no longer located on low-lying shelves, have also skyrocketed."

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price said the increased library patronage is particularly pleasing. "People are rediscovering the Traralgon library as a community space and they are spending more of their time studying, reading the papers, socialising, or simply relaxing."

Cr Price said the new library complemented the recently refurbished service centre in Traralgon. "The new maternal and child health centre, which will be completed mid year, is also being located in the civic precinct. This will result in an ideal focal point becoming established in central Traralgon for service delivery to the community," Cr Price added.

The redeveloped Traralgon library is located in the civic precinct, Kay Street. For further information and other library enquiries, phone 5176 3630.
