Council Calls For Quotations For Social Impact Analysis

Latrobe City Council is pleased that the next step in the process for completing a Social Impact Analysis for the Latrobe Valley will shortly commence with Council calling for quotations to scope the project.

By Latrobe City - 24th November 2011 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Council identified the need for a social impact analysis in 2009. The analysis will provide information about the impacts of the introduction of a carbon pricing scheme on the Latrobe Valley, and an insight into how the community can best transition to a low carbon future.

"The idea of a social impact study is to give us an idea of the challenges our region might face, as one of the areas that will be impacted by a price on carbon. Latrobe City Council is proud to be taking the lead on this important project. It is another way in which we can be proactive in guiding our community through the transition period.

"The need for a social impact analysis specifically aimed at the Latrobe Valley was identified as a key priority by Latrobe City Council in the development of our policy "Positioning Latrobe City for a Low Carbon Emission Future" in 2010. We are delighted that it is also seen as a priority by our local, state and Australian government counterparts," Cr White said.

"Latrobe City Council made a successful application to the Regional Development Australia Gippsland Committee (RDA Gippsland) for funding of up to $20,000 for a detailed scoping and methodology document for a full regional analysis. The Latrobe Valley will be stage one of a two-stage project that will eventually include the whole of Gippsland that will provide an overall snapshot of the entire region. This staged approach will help form the basis of any future economic transition.

Cr White added that Latrobe City Council is welcoming the opportunity to work closely in partnership with key stakeholders Wellington Shire Council, Baw Baw Shire Council, RDA Gippsland and the Victorian State Government.

"We have also liaised directly with the Australian Government which has expressed a keen interest in this project and is supportive of our efforts to ensure that the full Social Impact Analysis is conducted in the Latrobe Valley at the earliest opportunity," Cr White concluded.

The quotation document is publicly available on Latrobe City Council’s website and applications are due on Wednesday 23 November 2011.
