Traralgon T-Birds Big V FutureLast night's meeting with the Victorian Basketball League "the Big V" was positive and constructive according to appointed spokesperson David Roberts. By David Roberts - 16th February 2005 - Back to News The VBL Executive Officer, Matt Cowling met with representatives from the Traralgon T-Birds, Latrobe City Pacers and Latrobe City Energy to address Traralgon's current player shortage and potential withdrawal from the 2005 Big V Division 1 Women’s League.
"It was agreed last night that a combined effort be put in place to find the 3 or 4 additional players required for Traralgon to field a team this year" said Roberts.
"Traralgon have a Coach waiting in the wings, but desperately need players due to the loss of a few senior players this year" he said.
Traralgon believe that they have players being developed through their junior programs, but none are ready to step-up to the Big V Division 1 Women this season.
The Latrobe City Energy teams may assist as these teams were development last year to provide greater opportunities for players and an important link between local representative basketball and the elite level competition of both the Pacers and T-Birds.
Energy last night gave the meeting an undertaking that they would identify any players on their roster that have the skills and experience, and are ready to step up into the Women’s Division 1 T-Birds team.
"It’s a delicate balancing act," said Roberts. "We are mindful that we don’t want to promote people before they are ready, but recognise the importance of keeping the T-Birds in the competition"
"We have 3 Gippslanders in the Women’s National Basketball League Grand Final this weekend, and it would disappointing to lose a step in our local career path to this level".
Traralgon believe a team could be established the following year, however to re-establish the team may be difficult if the players available this year commit to other programs.
"Ideally, we must work together to keep the team going and on behalf of the elite basketball programs in Gippsland, I call on all local basketball associations to identify and encourage players to suit up for the T-Birds this year. It is important for basketball now and for future years.
Potential players to contact Max Wall at the Traralgon T-Birds on 5174 3330 and are invited to attend a training session and team meeting at 8pm on Tuesday the 22nd of February at the Traralgon Basketball Stadium.
Players who are unsure of their skill level are also invited to join the Latrobe City Energy Women’s team who will be commencing training this Wednesday night, 7pm at Lavalla Catholic College, Grey Street, Traralgon. All players are welcome and will have the opportunity to discuss their involvement in either the T-Birds or Energy teams.
A decision about the future of the Traralgon T-Birds women’s team will be made following Tuesday’s training session to meet the Big V’s February deadline.
