Upgrade for Boolarra Hall announcedA $148,000 upgrade of the Boolarra Memorial Hall was jointly announced by the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, and Latrobe City Councillor Doug Caulfield on Thursday. By Latrobe City Council - 30th October 2006 - Back to News The upgrade comprises a $98,000 grant from the Victorian Government, $49,500 funding from Latrobe City Council, and an in-kind contribution from the Boolarra Community.
Cr Caulfield said the funding will provide for a kitchen upgrade and for numerous improvements to reduce energy costs and improve the acoustics and usability of the memorial hall.
"A key component of the works will be accessibility improvements to the hall itself; and also within the structure to the various facilities such as toilets and kitchen area," Cr Caulfield said.
"The large stage area will also be secured so that it can be closed off and used independently as a comfortable meeting area, or opened for larger gatherings, concerts and dances.
"This upgrade and the improvements that will result from the work have been on the community’s wish list for many years. It’s great to see that the community’s proposal for the memorial hall will now become a reality," Cr Caulfield added.
Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, said the upgrade is important for the Boolarra community. "Local halls are the heart and soul of many communities and a valuable resource. I congratulate those involved in putting together the upgrade proposal as it demonstrates a keen interest in furthering the quality of life for the whole community," Mr Jenkins said.
"This project also aims to achieve an increased focus on tourism for Boolarra, identified as one of the key visions for the town in the recent Structure Plan.
"Boolarra features as the starting point on the rail trail to Mirboo North and is well known for its annual folk music festival. The tourism focus will be increased by providing improved facilities for the annual folk festival," Mr Jenkins said.
"The memorial hall is located in the centre of the township and provides the key link between outdoor performance spaces and the town’s main store and hospitality venues. As such its upgrade will do much to empower the community to bolster tourism development," Mr Jenkins added.
