Following a competitive tender process for council's hard waste contract, council's at-call hard waste contract was recently re-tendered, with WM Waste Management Services successful in securing a renewed contract which came into effect from 1 October 2022.

Residents have several options for the disposal of acceptable hard waste through Baw Baw Shire Council hard waste service

Free kerbside collection

Under the new contract, residents are able to book the following:

  • One free 'at call' kerbside collection of up to two cubic metres of hard waste any time throughout the year. (This can be exchanged for a Transfer Station Pass for free disposal of up to two cubic metres of hard waste or green waste at any council operated transfer station)
  • One additional paid 'at call' hard waste collection service per financial year through council's customer service team at a subsidised cost of $74 or $36 for pensioners. This new at call service replaces the two scheduled paid collections held in October/November and March/April in previous years

Under the free kerbside collection service, the new contract now accepts SUV and four-wheel drive tyres up to 35 inches in diameter (off rim), up to a maximum of four per booking.

However, residents who book a free transfer station drop off will have to pay the gate fee for disposal of their tyres. Bookings can be made online at WM Waste Management Services or by calling 1800 969 278 between 8.00am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

Booking a free transfer station

Residents will be notified of their booking via a confirmation email or text message advising the date of collection and a list of acceptable and unacceptable items. A reminder SMS will also be sent on the Friday prior to collection. Residents booking a free transfer station drop off will also be sent a confirmation email, outlining the requirements for their drop off at the transfer station.

Baw Baw Shire Council continues to lead the way in Gippsland by offering residents the only free at call hard waste collection in the region. By offering the At-Call Hard Waste or Transfer Station Pass, residents are provided with more flexible options to dispose of their hard waste to reduce the likelihood of illegally dumped waste within the municipality that is potentially harmful to the environment and a significant cost to manage.

Minimise amount of waste

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "WM Waste Management Services has provided council's at-call hard waste collection service since 2017, delivering an efficient and well managed service to Baw Baw Shire residents."

"Following a competitive tender process, we are very pleased to continue our contract with WM Waste, provide a mindful approach to recycling and reusing and strive to minimise the amount of waste that ends up in landfill. I encourage our residents to take advantage of the free 'at call' kerbside collections services available during their spring cleaning activities." Mayor Leaney said.
