Your Council, Your Election

Bass Coast Shire Council is encouraging anyone interested in the forthcoming Council election to attend a free information session being conducted by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) on Monday 29 August 2005 at 7.00pm.

The session promises to provide a clear explanation of the role of local government, the role of local councillors, and the process for nominating and running for election as a councillor.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said that councillors play a vital leadership role in their community.

"Councillors provide an invaluable link between the community and Council decision making. It is an exciting, diverse and demanding role.

"The information being provided by the MAV will appeal to all people in the community who have an opinion about their Council," Mr Bawden said.

The face of local government across Victoria has changed a lot over the past decade. The move to larger municipalities with greater numbers in population and bigger budgets has required councillors to involve themselves in more strategic planning and policy direction, as well as business management and service delivery.

The MAV is the professional body representing councillors and councils across Victoria.

Eligible to Stand for Council

Any person who is entitled to be on the voters’ roll in any ward of the Shire is qualified to nominate as a candidate.

Mr Bawden encouraged anyone considering standing at the election to attend the MAV session.

"The MAV information session will cover such issues as the duties and commitments on people elected as councillors, and what to expect during the election process," Mr Bawden said.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) will also run two sessions for candidates on the election process on Monday 17 October at Cowes and Tuesday 18 October at Wonthaggi, both starting at 7:30 pm.
