Mains cleaning targets central Bairnsdale

By East Gippsland Water - 18th November 2010 - Back to News

East Gippsland Water will be high-pressure cleaning water mains linked to more than 1,100 households and businesses in central Bairnsdale between 22 and 29 November to boost the efficiency of the water supply network and maintain drinking water quality.

This work is being carried out as part of the Corporation’s extensive ongoing mains cleaning program across East Gippsland. Bairnsdale streets being targeted include: Bull St; Mitchell St; Wallace St; Pearson St; Francis St; Dawson St; Ligar St; Grant St; McCulloch St; Pyke St; Nicholson St; Bailey St; Main St; Service St; Riverine St; Swan St; Anderson St; Morrison St; Hodgson St; Turnbull St; Warde St; Pinnock St; and Murphy St.

Using a highly effective air scouring unit purchased earlier in the year, water mains will be cleaned using compressed air mixed with water at high pressure to keep the reticulation pipework clear of silt deposits and other debris.

Letters have been sent out to those households and businesses affected, including details of any interruption to the water supply, how to prepare and what to do if you are a registered special needs customer.

To help keep any inconvenience to a minimum the cleaning work will be conducted outside peak water usage periods. For residential areas this means cleaning pipelines between 10am and 3pm on weekdays, while for businesses operating during the day the work will be carried out after hours.

There should be no disruption to road traffic while the work is being conducted.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "We thank customers in advance for their patience and cooperation. This routine cleaning is necessary to improve the efficiency of our drinking water network and is a continuation of mains cleaning work carried out earlier this year in the middle of Bairnsdale, West Bairnsdale, Eastwood, Wy Yung and further afield in Metung, Newmerella, Orbost, Mallacoota."

Customers who would like more information should contact East Gippsland Water’s Bairnsdale office on 1300 720 700.

The Corporation will also be taking the opportunity presented by this latest work to ensure that emergency infrastructure such as mains water valves are readily visible and accessible.
