The decorations, designed to reflect the Latrobe Valley, were made at the invitation of the Governor of Victoria, and the project was facilitated by Latrobe City Council.

Receiving the decorations at corporate headquarters last week, Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan said the students had created a design that spoke of their own experiences of Christmas.

"The Christmas tree design resonated with the students as a symbol of their own feelings about living in the Latrobe Valley. This project has seen them devote time, energy and skills to create a decoration that evokes the spirit of our community. The students should be as proud as we are to know that their creation will be hanging on the Christmas tree at Government House," Cr O’Callaghan said.

LV FLO campus principal Brett Pedlow said the project had allowed the students to work collaboratively.

"Our students brainstormed ideas for a design and voiced a shared and common image, the Christmas tree. Students reasoned that the Valley is known for its extensive pine plantations. They talked about the trees in shopping centres and stores, for sale roadside and the Christmas decorations in gardens around the Valley. For many, this is a happy and affordable Christmas tradition.

"Students also agreed that the design concept for their ornament had to be unusual, interactive if possible, bright and modern that represented them as young people. The project required planning, mathematics, baking and, most of all, careful drilling. The Christmas tree is made from polymer clay and a pipe cleaner," Mr Pedlow said.

"The students are thrilled that their decoration will hang on the Christmas tree at Government House. Many of our students experience hardship at home and knowing that something that has been borne out of their own imaginations and hard work will be on display in Melbourne, is a huge boost to their confidence."

Cr O’Callaghan will attend a reception to unveil the Victorian Community Christmas Tree at Government House on Friday 2 December.
