Council To Study Waterloo Road Level Crossing

Latrobe City Council and VicRoads have initiated a joint partnership to look at opportunities to enhance vehicle movement and safety around the Waterloo Road/Lloyd Street level crossing in Moe.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st August 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor Lisa Price said that council, in responding to community concerns, initiated the joint investigation.

"Residents have raised concerns in relation to the safety of the intersection and rail crossing. These concerns relate particularly to large trucks using the crossing and a practice known as ‘short stacking’.

"Short stacking occurs when the extra length of a truck hangs over or protrudes within the rail level crossing intersection. As truck lengths have progressively become longer, this has increased the risk of accidents related to queuing and storage spaces at the intersection," Cr Price explained.

"This protrusion is particularly dangerous when a train is moving through the crossing."

Cr Price said that Latrobe City Council and VicRoads have agreed to fund an independent traffic expert to analyse the safety of the intersection and develop a number of recommendations to improve safety.

"Once these recommendations have been considered, Latrobe City Council and VicRoads will identify a plan of action.

"This is a highly complex situation which presents a range of difficult and challenging traffic management and engineering elements," Cr Price said.

"Council is determined to find the best possible solution and despite our desire to act quickly, we understand that rushing in and tinkering around the edges would not be appropriate.

"However, the community can rest assured that this intersection is receiving our full attention," Cr Price concluded.
