Council clears the way for supermarket

Latrobe City Council has cleared the way for the Yallourn North supermarket to go ahead

By Latrobe City Council - 7th June 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council has cleared the way for the Yallourn North supermarket to go ahead, by approving an amendment to the La Trobe Planning Scheme at its last Council Meeting.

Councillor Tony Zimora said plans to reopen a small supermarket in North Road had been frustrated by restrictions imposed through the former Shire of Narracan’s Planning Scheme which Latrobe City inherited, that zoned the area in North Road as residential.

"The original supermarket was built prior to the former Shire of Narracan rezoning the land as residential, but because the supermarket already existed when the Planning Scheme was changed, it was entitled to continue trading," Cr Zimora said.

"Because the supermarket then closed for a number of years, the right to reopen a commercial business on the property was forfeited. When there was a move to re-establish the supermarket, the Planning Scheme prevented that being done without an amendment being made," Cr Zimora said.

"While this is normally a lengthy process, Council was aware of significant community support to see the supermarket reopened, and pulled out all stops to deal with the statutory requirements as quickly as possible. I’m happy to say all the statutory work has been done, Council has approved an amendment to the Planning Scheme which will allow the supermarket to go ahead, and we are now confident the Minister will approve the amendment.

"I’m very pleased we have been able to respond to the needs of Yallourn North Citizens. There is a significant aging population in the community who find it difficult to travel, and their needs will now be met by having a local supermarket to shop at, providing them with immediate access to a wide range of goods which presently require a trip out of town.

"The refurbished store should also have a positive social effect of creating another meeting-place and enhancing the residents existing belief in the strength of their town," Cr Zimora added.
