The council is a finalist in the Councils with populations greater than 15,000 residents category.

Latrobe City Council has been selected as a finalist for their commitment to improve heart health through building a sense of community, encouraging people to be physically active, be smoke-free and make healthy food choices," Heart Foundation Victoria CEO Diana Heggie said.

"The awards are important because they recognise the outstanding achievements of local governments in the continuing fight against heart disease – the single biggest killer of Australian men and women".

"The Victorian finalists are Latrobe City Council, Cardinia Shire Council, Wyndham City Council, Ararat Rural City Council, City of Melbourne and Maribyrnong City Council".

"All six finalists stood out from a record number of nominations and should be congratulated for their contribution to creating healthy communities." Ms Heggie said.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that the award nomination recognised Latrobe City Council and its plan partners’ commitment to delivering on the Latrobe City Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2013- 2017.

"The Latrobe City Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2013-2017 and the Council Plan both outline ways in which Council will play a role in encouraging the community to live healthier lifestyles. For the organisation, it is pleasing that the work in this area has been officially acknowledged by this awards nomination. For the community, it will be reassuring to know that the work will be having a positive impact on our health and wellbeing," Cr Gibson said.

The award nomination recognises the work being delivered by the Recreation Liveability Team and Healthy Together Latrobe – a partnership between Latrobe Community Health Service and Latrobe City Council - in the areas of strengthening our local food system, supporting workers to sit less at work, and supporting people to be active through our future open space planning.

Now in their 22nd year, the Heart Foundation Local Government Awards provide an opportunity for local government to celebrate their achievements and receive recognition for their commitment to creating healthier communities.

Winners will be announced at the Municipal Association Victoria Annual Conference and Dinner on Thursday 23rd October 2014.
