Whitelaws Track gets significant upgradeAn extensive upgrade to a section of Whitelaws Track between Yinnar and Budgeree is currently being undertaken by Latrobe City Council. By Latrobe Shire Council - 29th July 2003 - Back to News The road works encompass widening and sealing Whitelaws Track from Explorers Road to the Mill Road while reducing the sharpness of a number of bends.
Gunyah Ward Councillor, Bob Smith, said the modifications would considerably improve safety for local road users by improving the line of sight for drivers and providing a safer environment for vehicles to pass.
"Whitelaws Track provides access for a number of logging trucks to plantations north of The Mill Road, while there are also a substantial number of residents living on Whitelaws Track or travelling from the Budgeree area via Whitelaws Track for shopping or business in the Latrobe Valley," Cr Smith explained.
"I’m delighted to see work being undertaken on what I know from my own experience to be a difficult stretch of road. It is also a very good example of where Council is not only maintaining its road infrastructure, but upgrading road infrastructure," Cr Smith said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the upgrade to Whitelaws Track had been designed to minimise impacts on the native vegetation along the length of the road. "Where impacts could not be avoided and native vegetation has been removed, plans have been set in place to revegetate areas along the road reserve and create habitat suitable for native fauna," Cr Middlemiss said.
"Five hundred trees and plants are being used to reinstate the roadside environment in the works area," Cr Middlemiss said.
Whitelaws Track is one of the gravel road sealing projects being Federally funded under the Roads to Recovery Program.
Design Engineer, John Morrow, said the work on the 1.6km section of Whitelaws Track would result in an upgrade to a 5.5m wide sealed surface.
"The treatment will be to seal the road generally on the existing alignment with minor changes on four of the corners. While the work is somewhat weather dependant, the upgrade should be completed in the next couple of months," Mr Morrow said.
