competitors are expected to participate in the event which will be held on Saturday 17 December at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve in Whittakers Road.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the Gippsland Gift was a premier sporting carnival that would provide significant economic and social benefits for our region.

"Latrobe City’s reputation as a regional sporting hub is greatly enhanced by hosting this prestigious event. Organisers hope that this Gift will rival the renowned Stawell Gift as Australia’s richest foot-race. More than 700 people, including a number of top ten ranked athletes, will compete in the busy program of events on the day, as well as the opportunity to host many hundreds of spectators and visitors to the region.

"An event of this calibre generates widespread support from local business operators, the media and the greater Gippsland regional community. Having World Champion athlete Sally Pearson as the event ambassador and a competitor is exciting. The Gift will showcase elite athletes and provide the local and wider community with the opportunity to see top quality sporting events in action," Cr Vermeulen said.

Sally Pearson will run in the $5000 120 metre Gift for Women. Other races feature the 120 metre Gift for Men, Quickest Footballer and Netballer in Gippsland, novice races, junior races and little athletics races. There will also be a ‘Get Healthy’ fun run from 8am promoting health in the community. Main event races begin at 12.30pm and conclude at 8pm. Cr Vermeulen added that like other events in Latrobe City, the Motorola Gippsland Gift would provide a tremendous boost to our community.

"As well as inspiring budding athletes in the region, the whole community can benefit from the economic and social interest generated by the scale of this event. We very much look forward to the 17 December to see the nation’s elite athletes, the local sports figures and the the top class sporting community in action," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
