New Fire Service Property Levy To Come Into Effect From 1 July

From 1 July 2013 the Fire Service Levy that was previously charged as a component of your house and contents insurance, will become the Fire Service Property Levy and will be charged on your annual rate notice.

By Latrobe City - 19th June 2013 - Back to News

All municipal councils in Victoria are responsible for collecting the monies on behalf of the State Government.

Latrobe City Council’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that under the new system all property owners will make a contribution.

"All residential properties will pay a $100 base charge. The levy will be calculated on the Capital Improved Value of your property and the Levy for this year will be 11.5 cents per $1,000 of valuation.

"Pensioners will receive a $50 concession on the base charge component in addition to the normal concession applied to rate and charges," Mr Buckley said.

"All non-residential properties will pay a $200 base charge. Again, the levy will be calculated on the Capital Improved Valued of the property and this is dependent on the land classification of the property," Mr Buckley said.

Mr Buckley added that the new system could potentially add a significant amount to the total rates bill.

"We understand that some residents may receive a rates bill significantly higher than previous rate notices, because of the addition of the levy. Therefore, we are offering residents a longer period of time to pay their rates. You can begin to make payments from the 1 July 2013 to spread the load," Mr Buckley said.

If you wish to take up the option of spreading payments over a longer period of time please contact the Property and Rates team on telephone 1300 367 700 and the team will calculate your payments.

Ratepayers who take up this option will be exempt from interest, provided regular payments are received.
