Wonthaggi construction boomWonthaggi has experienced a boom of construction works undertaken by the Bass Coast Shire Council recently, with more projects scheduled to come. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th July 2006 - Back to News Some of the recent projects include:
· The refurbishment of the historical Wonthaggi Railway Station at a cost of $190,000. This recently won the prestigious Best Conservation award at the South East Development Awards for Architectural Excellence.
· The construction of roads and drainage for Hospital Drive, Court Street and Easton Street at a cost of $400,000. This project is due to be completed by mid August.
· Additional footpaths on Korumburra Road between Elizabeth Street and Wentworth Road at a cost of $23,000.
· Ongoing rehabilitation of the former Wonthaggi Landfill site at a cost of $10,000.
The Council has also announced it is undertaking the first phase to construct the Graham Street, Wonthaggi town entrance (Inverloch entrance).
"We will be undertaking consultation with landowners in Graham Street, between Webb Drive and McKenzie Street, throughout July with works planned for the 2007-2008 financial year," informed Council’s Acting Assets Director, Steve Piasente.
"The proposed works include the widening of Graham Street, provision for parking, kerb and channel, footpath improvments and drainage works.
"It is expected that adjoining landowners, Council and VicRoads will all contribute to the cost of the project," he said.
The plans for the project have recently been approved by VicRoads. Council officers are currently working with VicRoads to finalise plans for the White Road entrance (Melbourne entrance) to Wonthaggi.
"A concept plan is being prepared to upgrade the exisiting service road for the business properties.
"Drainage improvements, widening of the highway and landscaping are also proposed to transform the main entrance to Wonthaggi from its current state to a fully constructed entrance.
"Consultation will commence later this year with works planned to commence in 2007.
"It is expected that adjoining landowners, Council and VicRoads will also all contribute to the cost of this project," Mr Piasente advised.
